Who is Randy Hencken?

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

Hi! I am Randy, the instigator and host of these excursions. I served as the MAPS Communication Director from 2008-11 and organized the first Psychedelic Science conference in San Jose.

As someone who has always had a love for the outdoors, I am excited to share my passion for adventure with the psychedelic science community. I have a long history of outdoor pursuits, including working as a whitewater raft guide, snowboard instructor, as well as leading a Burning Man camp for the past 18 years. Last year, I was a boatman on a 24 day expedition down the Grand Canyon. I am also a resident of Snowmass Village, Colorado and it is my delight to share this beautiful state with PS23 attendees.

In addition to my love of the outdoors, I was the Associate Director of the Ibogaine Association from 2001-05, which I joined after overcoming my addiction to heroin via ibogaine therapy.

I have also been involved in the world of seasteading and floating cities. I served as the executive director of The Seasteading Institute and co-founded Blue Frontiers, a company that attempted to build a floating city in French Polynesia. While that project did not ultimately come to fruition, I remain committed to exploring innovative ways of living and building communities in harmony with the natural world.

When I'm not busy with all of these activities, I am a happy husband to Onyx and a proud dad to a doodle. My goal is to make these excursions accessible to people traveling from afar, so they can share the experience of adventuring in the beauty of nature.
